Many of those in this situation may act out and teens may engage in dangerous behaviors, such as substance use or self-mutilation. The I Have a Friend program offers them an alternative and shows them that they can move beyond their grief and pain to lead complete, happy lives, just as the adult volunteers have. These adults understand the importance of open communication and work to help their mentees become more resilient.
