City developers implemented controls to stop the Spanish homes from being destroyed in 1925, in an effort to keep the city’s charm. This was the first time in the history of US for a group to actively think of maintaining its architecture. The laws were set to keep intact unique buildings and parks. Santa Barbara implemented its protection for historical landmarks in 1960.
